The Intergovernmental Working Group on older persons is an open ended intergovernmental body. Its primary mandate is to elaborate a comprehensive, internationally legally binding instrument on the human rights of older persons, with the objective of promoting, protecting, and ensuring the full enjoyment of human rights by older persons. This is the first meeting of the working group. The main objective of the organisational session will be to determine and articulate the methods of work of the working group and to define the main elements of a programme of work for its first session.

On the International Day of Older Persons, October 1st, 2024, the City of Geneva hosted a significant event titled “Geneva Calls: A Pivotal Moment for Older Persons’ Rights,” at the Palais des Nations. This session was organized by the NGO Committee on Ageing (Geneva), in collaboration with Member States and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and took place during the 57th session of the Human Rights Council.
“Leave no one behind!” is a key principle of the United Nations’ “Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development”, as proclaimed under Goal No. 3: “to ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages”. A particular group threatened by the risk of not having full chances to live a healthy life and enjoy well-being are older persons who are marginalized or excluded by society. The IDOP 2024 conference addresses specific forms of marginalization of older persons and its possible influences on their health.
