World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Violence against older persons, a human rights violation
Side Event, Human Rights Council 38th session
Monday 18 June 2018 – 12:00-13:30 – Conference Room XXIII- Palais
Violence against older persons remains largely hidden. However, it is gaining recognition as an important barrier to the enjoyment of human rights by older persons.  Older women and older persons with disabilities may be especially vulnerable to abuse by a range of perpetrators including intimate partner, family members, caregivers and institutions.
This side event will discuss how the issue is covered – or not – by existing human rights mechanisms. It will showcase legal approaches in national contexts.
As the 9th session of the OEWG in July 2018 will discuss in focus issues of autonomy and independence and long term and palliative care, the event will focus on how different forms of violence, abuse and neglect have a direct impact on the denial of autonomy and a good standard of care.
